Realistic portrait with orange petals on a calf

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A realistic portrait of a woman with long dark hair, dark lips and a calm gaze, set against drifting orange and red petals. The face is shaded in soft greys with fine detail in the eyes and lips, while the petals are rendered in warm colour. The portrait fills the limb, with the petals placed around the edges to frame the face against a pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are late for the last train to Harrowgate, and the platform has already emptied into the dark. Wind takes the wet leaves off the bench and skates them past your shoes. A porter in a damp cap is rattling the shutter on the buffet, and he tells you the 21:14 is standing at the far end with its doors open, as though it has been waiting for someone in particular.

Inside, a woman is reading a paperback with its spine broken in three places. She does not look up when you sit. Her hair is pinned with a tortoiseshell comb, and she has the stillness of someone who has already decided where the train is going. You know the book. Your mother left it on your bed the summer you stopped writing home, its margins full of pencilled arrows pointing at lines you were never meant to find.

Somewhere past Peterborough the open window lets in petals from a cherry tree that should have been bare weeks ago, orange at the edges as if they had been held too near a flame. One settles on the page. She closes the book on it, presses it flat with her palm, and says your name the way the porter said the train was waiting.

You open your mouth, but the carriage is already moving, and the petal stays where it is, marking the page where the arrows stop.
