Skull-faced girl and rose on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A long-haired girl with pale blonde hair and dark, heavily shaded eyes looks out from the tattoo, her face painted or marked to resemble a skull. Smooth grey shading builds the hair and face, while the lower section has a red-toned background with a black-outlined rose. The image is a close, slightly angled photograph of the upper arm, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

You learn the stairs first, a hundred and twelve of them spiralling up inside the tower, and you count them every night so your feet remember the way when the lamp is the only thing you can see. Your father says the sea doesn't care who climbs. He is wrong about that, but he is right that it never stops asking.

The autumn the Marigold went onto the Scarrow reef, you were the one who kept the brazier burning on the gallery and watched the sailcloth bundles come in on the tide. You had painted your face for the harvest fair that week, white over the bones of your cheeks, black rings round the eyes, the way the travelling players did, and it had not washed off. Your father spat when he saw you. The lifeboat men didn't look at your face at all. They looked past you, up the stairs, at the light.
A rose lay in the wrack below the gallery that morning, one bloom from the wrecked cargo of hothouse flowers, its petals bruised the colour of wine. You pressed it flat into the lamp room's logbook, between the entry for the storm and the entry for the calm. The book still smells of salt and something sweeter, and your father never wrote your name in it again.
Tonight the fog comes in thick as wool. You climb the hundred and twelve stairs with a fresh pot of paint in your apron pocket, wipe the glass clean, and turn the great lens towards the water. Somewhere out there a ship is feeling its way in, and soon its captain will ask the dark what it is looking at. You will be the light, and you will let him see the skull and keep coming.
