The lock at Shardlow has been shut since the floods, so we lie below it with the engine ticking and nothing to do but scrub. Mam's rose bowl came out of the locker with a crack down one side, and I've been staring at the red rose we painted on the water-can when you were still aboard. It has gone dull. I wanted a real one to look at, so on Tuesday I walked up the towpath with a bread knife and a bucket.

The climbing rose on the wall of the lock-keeper's cottage is older than both of us. Mr Ashby came out with his pipe while I was sawing at a stem, and I braced myself for a telling-off. He only watched me choose the best bloom, a big heavy one gone open at the edges, its outer petals the deep crimson of boiled beetroot and the inside lit brighter where the sun reached down into it. Then he said his wife had planted it the year they married, and nobody had pruned it since March.

I didn't know what to say, so I said nothing and held the bucket steady. He nodded at the water, and I understood he meant I should keep it, not waste it. This morning there was still a drop of dew sitting on the lowest petal, a little bead that refused to run off, and I pressed one petal flat between the pages of the almanac so you can see it when you're home. Look after the rose on the can. I'm not finished with mine yet.
