Realistic red rose on the wrist
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large, fully open red rose fills the centre of the frame on a wrist. The petals are rendered with soft gradients from bright red to deep crimson, with dark shadowing along the lower edges that gives the flower depth. The plain skin and grey backdrop keep the focus on the tattoo.

The frost had got into the cold frame again, so I carried the bucket of warm water out at six, before the light, and knelt in the mud between the rows of Dad's old bush roses. Nobody in Thornbury Cross expected a bloom in January. Mrs Hale had asked for one anyway, a single red rose for her husband's coffin, and Dad had always said the hardest thing to make a rose do was open on time.

The bush by the gate had one bud left, fat and dark at the tip, the colour of a plum going soft. I wrapped it in a fold of newspaper against the wind and brought it into the scullery, where the range was still ticking. Dad used to say a rose opens in the warm, not the cold, and you have to trust it. I sat on the upturned crate and watched the petals begin to loosen, like a page turned slowly by someone reading in bed.
By noon the rose had opened to its heart, crimson where the shadow pooled at the edges and bright red where the window light caught the outer petals. I cut the stem short, wrapped it in wet cotton wool and foil, and drove it down the lane with the heater roaring. Mrs Hale was waiting at her gate in her husband's coat.
She took it without a word and pressed her face into the petals, then looked at me over the top of them. 'He always said you'd bring the last one,' she said. I didn't tell her the bush had three more buds hidden under the snow, waiting for a warmer week that might never come. Some things you keep for the next person who asks.
