Black and grey rose on the top of a foot
Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A large cluster of roses with dark leaves covers the top of a foot, with the toes visible at the bottom of the frame. The design uses heavy black outlines, with the petals shaded in grey using dense stippled dots and solid black areas in the leaves. The photograph is taken from above on a sandy background, and the design is black and grey with no colour ink.

You are up before the sparrows on the morning of the Haverly wedding, stripping thorns from forty stems in the cold back room of the shop on Sand Lane, because Mrs Oduya ordered the roses in April and the wholesaler has sent the wrong shade of cream. The van is double-parked outside with its hazards ticking. The buds in the bucket have opened too far in the warm, their petals gone soft at the edges like paper left out in the rain.

The bride's mother arrives at seven with a shoebox wrapped in a headscarf. Inside is a dried rose, black at the edges, pressed flat between the pages of a hymnal. "Make it look like this," she says, "but alive." You have no black roses. You have a box of grey ash-rose stems from a grower in Kent and a pair of secateurs that need oiling. So you work the way your father taught you on the allotment: strip the outer leaves, keep the dark ones, cut each stem on the slant so it drinks.
By nine the arch is built. You step back and the cluster looks less like a bouquet than the shadow of one, every bloom shaded like a sky before rain, the leaves so dark they seem to swallow the light. Mrs Oduya's hand finds yours and squeezes once. "He'd have liked the leaves," she says, and you don't ask who he was.
At the reception you find a single bloom left in the bucket, its centre gone the colour of wet slate, its stippled petals dusted pale where the light hits them. You tuck it into your apron pocket and drive home with the window down, the sea smelling of salt and diesel, the rose on the passenger seat turning slowly towards the sun.
