Realistic red squirrel on a lower leg

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A red squirrel sits upright and holds a nut or seed in its front paws, with its bushy tail curving up behind it. The fur is rendered with fine, soft shading and highlights, and the eye is detailed with a blue iris. Warm russet and orange tones dominate the squirrel, set against a teal and green background with leaves along the bottom edge.

The lift in Hollins Court had been broken since March, so Denise took the stairs with a bag of shopping in each hand and counted the floors the way her father had taught her to count hymns. On the eleventh landing a red squirrel sat on the windowsill, working at a hazelnut with its small black hands, as if the concrete outside were a proper wood and the car park below had never been poured. Nobody on the estate had seen one in years. The council had put up a sign about grey squirrels being a nuisance, and the kids had made a game of chasing them off the bins.

Her neighbour Ruth had told her the squirrel came every morning now, sometimes twice, and that it watched the flats the way a lollipop man watches traffic. Denise thought that was daft until she caught it herself, its bright eye fixed on her through the glass while its tail lifted and settled like a flag being checked for wind. She opened the window a crack and set down the heel of a loaf on the sill. The squirrel did not run. It turned the crust over, sniffed it, and took it to the corner where the paint had flaked, where it buried it with a neat, unhurried scrape.

Her son phoned from Leeds that evening asking about the rent, and she told him about the squirrel instead. He laughed the way he used to when he was small and she had fibbed about the ice cream van. The next morning the crust was gone from the corner and a single hazelnut sat in its place, shell split clean down the middle. Denise picked it up, still warm from the sun, and put it in her pocket with her keys.
