Realistic wolf head tattoo

Realism · Mixed · Photo

A detailed wolf head faces forward, with pointed ears, pale blue-grey eyes and a dark nose. The fur is rendered with soft, layered shading in black, grey, brown and orange, giving it a lifelike texture. The design fills most of the frame, with fine whisker lines extending across the lower face against the surrounding skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Tam Greaves kept his fiddle in a flour sack, because the damp in the hall at Harrow Cross got into everything else. Every Saturday he carried it up the lane under the elms, lit the paraffin lamps himself, and played until the floor was grey with boot dust and the girls had stopped counting the dances they owed each other.

The wolf came the first winter the snow stayed. It never came into the light. It sat at the edge of the trees where the lamp-glow gave out, its head held level, and watched the dancers with eyes so pale they looked like frost on a window. Nobody screamed. The miller's wife said it was only waiting for the last reel to finish, and that a wolf which waited was a wolf which could be bargained with.

So on the night of the hard frost Tam stepped outside between tunes, rosin on his fingers, and asked it plainly what it wanted. The wolf said nothing. It only turned its head towards the fiddle case, then back towards him, and waited the way a creditor waits.

Tam was a man who paid what he owed. He went back in, took the fiddle out, and played the one tune his mother had hummed over the wash, slow and crooked, until the animal lay down in the snow with its muzzle on its paws. When he came out at dawn it was gone, leaving only a line of tracks running off towards the river and a single grey hair caught on the latch, which he kept in his waistcoat pocket for the rest of his life.
