Colour realism tattoo of a fox's head in profile on the forearm, shown from two angles side by side.

Realistic fox portrait on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A detailed fox head in profile, with fur rendered in fine strokes of orange, white and black and a dark nose and whiskers. The shading builds soft volume across the face and ears, and the warm reds sit against the darker greys of the neck fur. The image is split into two side-by-side views of the same forearm tattoo, with a blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox came down to the harbour at Skerrow the winter the nets began to come up empty. Old Mairi Doig saw it first, sitting on the slipway with its tail wrapped round its feet, looking out past the breakwater as if it were waiting for a boat of its own. Nobody on the fleet liked that. A fox that watches the sea is a fox that wants something from it.

The men tried stones and then shouting, and when neither moved it they tried bread and fish heads, which it ate politely and then went back to watching the water. Davie Fenn, who had the widest boat and the worst temper, said it was a message from the drowned. His brother had gone down off the Ness the year before. So on the third morning Davie took the Brighid out alone before light, meaning to be rid of the whole business, and the fox was already sitting in the bow when he cast off.

He did not throw it over. He never told anyone why. He said only that it turned its head and looked at him the way his mother used to, sharp and sorry at once, and then it pointed its nose south-east, towards the deep ground where the cod had always been. He followed it. By noon the lines were heavy and the water was silver with fish.

Every spring after that, the Skerrow boats left their first catch on the slipway with the heads turned towards the open sea. Davie kept his brother's knife in the wheelhouse, and some mornings, if the light was low and the swell was quiet, he would swear he saw an orange flick of tail on the rocks, and then nothing but spray.
