Mouse on a branch with flowers
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A small rounded mouse with large ears and whiskers sits on a thin branch with slender leaves, a bud and a seed stalk. Fine hatching and stippling build the fur, leaf veins and petals, while the outlines stay crisp. The design is entirely black and grey and fills the frame, with a large flower head cropped at the lower left.

Our Bet had a mouse for a companion the whole winter the pit flooded, and the men said it was the only creature in Harrow Dene with sense enough to leave. It lived in the lamp room, in a tin of spare wicks, and it ate the crumbs from Tom Pollard's pasty every noon while he sat on the upturned bucket and pretended not to notice. Nobody thought much of it until the spring the hawthorn came out early and the bud on the branch by the shaft door swelled so fast you could hear it, Ruth Ashby swore, like a kettle thinking about boiling.

The mouse took to sitting on that branch in the evenings, quite still, ears turned toward the cage where the canaries were kept. When the ventilation fan sulked and the air went thick, the birds went quiet first, and the mouse would drop from the twig and run for the lamp room door without a backward look. Tom said it was a fool's luck. Ruth said it was the mouse being wiser than the manager, and she made him stop saying otherwise.
When they finally brought the pump up and the men walked out into the cold morning, Tom found the seed stalks had gone to fluff across the yard and the hawthorn was in full white flower. The mouse was sitting on the lowest twig, whiskers wet, washing its face as if nothing had happened at all. He crouched down beside it and said, quite softly, that he owed it a pasty. It did not argue.
