Nobody in Thornbury Cross sold roses in February, so Mrs Pell walked up to the cutter's yard with the frost still on her boots and asked old Tobias Vane for something that would last longer. He unwrapped a blue stone from its chamois, held it to the window, and the light broke off it in sharp white pieces across the flagstones. It cost her the egg money for a year. She carried it home in her glove and set it on the sill, where it threw small cold stars onto the wallpaper and did nothing else at all.

All that month she watched it. The stone did not wilt or drop its petals. It did not need water or the sun. Her neighbour's daughter came by to admire it and said it was the finest thing in the village, and Mrs Pell agreed, and then went out to the back wall where the old pink rose had climbed the bricks since her husband planted it. Every morning, even in the hard weeks, there were drops of dew on its petals, each one holding a tiny sky, and she would crouch in the cold to look at them before anyone else was up.

In March the rose was still there, bent and green-edged but alive, and the stone on the sill had not changed by a single facet. She took it down, wrapped it in its chamois, and gave it to the girl next door for her wedding ring box. Then she cut the last bloom, put it in a jar of water on the windowsill, and sat watching the morning come up through the drops.
