Colour realism tattoo of a pink rose with green leaves and a water droplet across the shoulder and upper arm.

Realistic pink rose on a shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A large pink rose with shaded petals and a glossy droplet on one petal fills the shoulder and upper arm, framed by dark green leaves and a bud at the edge. The petals use soft gradients of pink, red and white to give a three-dimensional look, while the foliage is shaded in deep greens and blacks. The photo is taken close up from the side, with the top of a white vest strap and blonde hair visible but no face shown.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had closed the Harrow road by four, and by the time Mrs Pell lit the lamps in the coaching room, nobody was expecting the carrier any more. We were eleven, counting the boy from the mill who had come in for a pint and stayed for the fire. I kept my hands round a cup of mulled cider and watched the window, where the frost had grown ferns over the glass and, in one corner, a single red rose of ice that the cook swore had not been there at dusk.

It was Tobias who noticed the rose first. He was a glazier from Stanmore with a sore wrist and a habit of telling everyone what the weather would do next. He wanted to scrape it away with a knife. Mrs Pell told him to leave it be, that her mother had called those flowers the inn's guest book, because they only opened when someone under the roof was about to leave it for good. On one petal nearest the glass hung a drop of water that would not freeze, bright as a bead, and as we watched it shivered and slid down the pane.

I went out to the stable yard at midnight to check the horses and found the drift beneath the window melted in a ring around a small red bud pushed up through the snow. I did not pick it. I knelt, breath smoking, and held my glove open beneath it until the drop fell into my palm, cold as a coin. In the morning the ice rose was gone and the road was open, and Tobias, who had argued all night about the weather, was the only one who did not come down to breakfast.
