Shaded rose with bud on lower abdomen

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A rose in full bloom sits beside a closed bud on a stem, with dark shaded leaves trailing down and to the right. The petals are rendered in soft grey gradients with defined black outlines and darker shadows in the folds. The tattoo is shown in a close crop on bare skin, with a grey top and a hand at the edge of the frame.

Sit you down nearer the range, the both of you, and mind the kettle, it's been spitting since noon. Winter on the Halloran place was a long grey thing in those years. The snow came off the hills in March and never quite went, and the only colour in the yard was the rose Old Nan Tully had trained up the byre wall.

Nobody believed it would live. It was a grey rose, the kind folk called a ghost rose, petals the shade of pewter ash, and it had no business flowering in a country that froze the water in the trough. But every December it put out one bud, tight as a fist, down by the stem where the leaves went dark as rain on slate. Nan would cut the bud and set it in a jar on the sill, and wait.

The year the lane flooded and the doctor could not get up it, Nan's grandson Eamon came in from the snow with his hands raw and asked her why she bothered. She told him the rose had waited out worse than him. Then she watched it, and he watched her, and neither of them said a word until the bud opened in the dark, one petal at a time, the way you'd lift a hem off a cold floor.

Eamon swore after that he could hear it, that small wet crack of a bloom deciding to be a bloom. He kept the jar going when Nan was gone. Some mornings the frost still lies on the sill like salt. But the bud comes, every winter, and he never once asked it to hurry.
