Colour realism tattoo of a pale pink rose and a rosebud with green leaves across the back of a hand and wrist.

Realistic rose tattoo on hand and wrist

Realism · Hand · Colour · Photo

A pale pink rose in full bloom sits on the back of the hand, with a smaller rosebud and green leaves extending up onto the wrist and forearm. The petals are rendered with soft gradual shading and fine detail, giving the flowers depth and volume. The palette is limited to muted pinks, creams and greens against natural skin, and the design is centred on the hand with the bud trailing upward.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every spring the rose came back through the broken flags of Hollin Keep, though nobody had planted it since the lord's wife died. Old Maud, who kept the goats on the hill below the walls, said it had been there when her grandmother was a girl, a pale bush with cream-edged petals that opened slowly, the way a sleeper turns over.

A tinker came up the track one April with a pack of tin pots and a boy who would not stop talking. He saw the rose by the gatehouse and laughed at it. "A ruin's no place for pink," he said, and he dug at the roots with his knife to take a cutting for his sister in the town. The boy cried when the blade went in. Maud heard the crying from the goat pen and came up the hill with her crook.

The tinker did not take the cutting. He stood with his knife in the soil and looked at the bud that had climbed the wall beside the gate, pale green at its base, rising higher than the mortar where nothing should have been able to root. "It's climbing," he said, as if that were a fault in it.

Maud pressed the bud back into the stone with two fingers and said the lord's wife had planted it to climb toward the window where she used to sit. The window was gone, so the rose had kept going. The tinker packed his pots and went down the track without his cutting, and the boy looked back at the wall until the bend took them. The bud opened that week, all at once, the colour of the inside of a shell.
