Realistic roses on a shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
Two large roses are tattooed over the shoulder, one partly behind the other, with a smaller bloom above. The petals use soft grey shading, fine highlights and dark deep-toned edges to give them depth and volume. Dark leaves sit below the flowers, and the plain background and black top keep the focus on the ink.

His daughter Irene came home from the city one October with a suitcase and no wedding ring. She found him on his knees by the third bed, cutting back a bloom so heavy it had dropped its head onto the gravel. "They won't flower again till June," he said. "Nothing that size lives through the frost. Mind the thorns."
She stayed through the winter, sorting tickets in the hut and reading the timetable aloud because he liked the names of the stops. In spring the largest rose opened in the dark behind the other, a second bloom that had been hiding under the first all along, and the stationmaster stood with his lamp and said nothing for a long while. Irene understood then that the garden had never been about the trains.
When he died the roses kept blooming without anyone to tell them how. Irene still walks the platform at ten past nine. The grey petals catch the lamplight, and the last train lifts its whistle as it passes the leaves.
