Bear paw print in cracked earth on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of a lower leg with a large paw print tattooed on the calf, showing pads and toes pressed into a cracked, stone-like surface. Soft shading and fine cracks give the paw a three-dimensional look, and three claw marks scratch down from the top of the design. The palette is mainly muted browns and greys with pale highlights, set against a blue wall and a wooden floor.

The sports hall at Ashbourne Comprehensive still smells of floor polish and squash, and Gareth Lowe has already told the bear story twice by the time the buffet runs out. He tells it the same way every time, pausing where the crowd leans in, as if the years have softened its edges without changing a word.

Summer of 1994, the quarry above Cold Hadden had dried to grey plates, cracked like old crockery. We found a paw print pressed into the crust, pads and toes as wide as a dinner plate, and three long scores dragging down from the rim towards the water. Gareth swore a bear had escaped from the travelling circus. I said it was Mr Hollis's Alsatian. He said Alsatians don't leave claws like that, and I had no answer, so I followed him down the slope with a torch we didn't need in the bright afternoon.

What I never told him was that I had made the print myself that morning. I pressed Dad's wooden cheese board into wet clay at the edge of the pond, then dragged a fork through the crust while Gareth was off hunting for a stick. The clay cracked as it dried, just as I'd planned, and by teatime it looked older than the quarry itself. Nobody ever found the bear. Nobody ever found me out either.

Now Gareth lifts his plastic cup and calls for a toast to the bear, and the whole hall cheers, and I raise mine too. He still believes. Across the room someone is laughing at the same old joke about Pollard's whistle, and I let the story stand, because some things are kinder left in the mud.
