Realistic skull and pocket watch on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A cracked human skull with water droplets on its surface sits above a pocket watch with Roman numerals, both rendered in smooth grey shading. The skull has strong highlights and deep shadows in the eye sockets and jaw, with a fine chain or cord visible beside the watch. The left image shows the full piece on the leg, and the right panel is a close-up of the skull's texture and cracks.

The hall still smells of floor polish and radiator dust, and someone has pinned the old form photographs along the wall beside the fire doors. You lean in close to Form 4B, squinting until the faces sharpen. There is the boy who copied your maths homework, and the girl who cut her own fringe during double Geography. Everyone looks younger than they feel, which is the cruellest trick of these evenings.

Dev Okafor finds you by the squash table with a glass of something flat in each hand. He was the one who wept at the end of Of Mice and Men and never once admitted it. Now he sells conservatories in Kettering, and he wants to show you the thing he had done last spring. On his phone is a cracked skull with water beaded across its crown, as if it has just surfaced from a bath, and beside it a pocket watch with Roman numerals. 'Pryce's watch,' he says. 'Remember? He kept it open on the desk during detention. Ten past nine, every time, like he'd been asked to wait.'
You remember. Mr Pryce never raised his voice. He only tapped the glass with one nail, and the whole room went quiet enough to hear the second hand. After the funeral the school auctioned his effects, and somebody's cousin bought the watch for a few pounds. Dev says it stopped at twenty to four the week Pryce died, and nobody has wound it since.
Later, when the tables are being stacked and the strip lights come up harsh, you find the watch in Dev's coat pocket, bought back from the cousin for the price of a round. You open the case. The hands still sit at twenty to four, and the crack across the glass catches the light like a thin bright vein. You wind it slowly, the way Pryce used to, and wait for the ticking to begin.
