Skull and pocket watch on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A skull is formed from the face of a pocket watch, with Roman numerals around the dial and visible gears and mechanism inside the case. The shading is greyscale with strong highlights and deep shadows that give the skull and metal surfaces a three-dimensional, realistic look. A darker, enlarged view of the same skull appears on the left of the frame, while the main tattoo fills the right side on a limb.

Dear Maud, The Guildmaster has finally let me touch the Vesper Clock in the tower of Harrowmere, and I have spent three nights with it on the bench under a lamp that smells of whale oil. You will laugh, but the face of it is a skull. Not carved, not painted: the dial itself forms the brow and the hollows of the eyes, with Roman numerals running round the crown of the bone like a crown that keeps the hours.

Inside the case the gears are alive in a way I cannot explain. Forty-one wheels, each cut from a different metal, and the escapement sits exactly where the jaw would hang. When I wind it, the teeth of the skull seem to close on every tick. The Guildmaster says the first king of Harrowmere commissioned it to remind his court that every hour is paid for in bone. I think he meant it as a warning to himself.
Last night the clock stopped at a quarter past eleven and would not start again. I took the case apart piece by piece, laid the gears out on green baize in the order they came, and found a single hair of silver wedged beneath the balance wheel. Nobody in the guild admits to owning it. The old clerk only said the king's jeweller had worked alone in the tower for a month before the clock was delivered, and that he was never seen on the stairs again.
I have put the hair in a thimble and carried it to the window. If the tower bell rings at midnight tomorrow, I will know someone has been counting for us. Write soon, and tell Father the orchard wall is not my fault. Your brother, Tobin.
