The generator coughs twice before it catches, and by the time the ghost train's smoke machine starts breathing across the car park, you have already fetched the spanners. Nell's skull lamp has gone dark again. It sits on the shelf above the track like a bored bishop, its painted rose flaked to the colour of weak tea, and nobody has seen it light properly since the show left Market Harborough.

Nell says the skull was her grandfather's, bought off a stall in Hull that sold nothing but rope and rumours. You don't doubt her. You take the lamp apart on an upturned crate while the steam organ wheezes through the fog, and the wiring is sound. It is the bulb. Nobody has stocked one that small since before the war. You sit with the cold glass in your palm and watch a pale butterfly drift out of the smoke and settle on the skull's crown, as if it had booked the spot in advance.

You don't shoo it away. You wait until it opens its wings, then screw the bulb in by feel, and the eye sockets fill with a yellow glow that makes the cracks in the bone look like river maps. The butterfly lifts and goes back into the smoke without a sound.

Nell comes back at dawn with two teas and finds you asleep against the wagon wheel. The fair packs up in the rain. You leave the lamp on the wagon step, still warm, its jaw open as if it has something to say and has decided, for once, to keep it short.
