White tiger head on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large tiger head faces forward, with a fine muzzle, whiskers and striped markings across the face and neck. The shading is smooth and detailed, moving from deep black stripes to soft grey highlights, with the eyes picked out in bright blue. The design fills the forearm and fades into the skin at the lower edge, against a dark top and a blurred indoor background.

The cargo hold of the Harrow Deep smelled of wet straw and recycled air, and the tiger had finally stopped pacing. She sat with her back against the bulkhead, grey and white under the blue work-light, watching me through the mesh with eyes the colour of a shallow reef. Dr Imke Vaarn had said that was the sedation, or the cold, or whatever the sequencers did to pigment. I had stopped asking which.

Three hundred years of ice had turned Earth into a sealed museum, and the manifest listed her only as Specimen Nine. The crew called her Winter. Nobody aboard had seen a living tiger, only the striped figures in the archive footage, whose old grain had turned them the colour of smoke. Winter kept her own colours. When the hold lights dimmed on their forty-hour cycle, she was the brightest thing in the dark.

The council wanted her gone at the next waystation, traded for water or sold for protein. I argued for six days in the mess hall, and on the seventh I unlatched the cage and sat on the floor beside her, the way Imke had taught me to sit with the sick sows in the hydroponic barns. Winter laid her great head against my knee. Her whiskers brushed my wrist like fine copper wire.

When the waystation docked, I walked her down the ramp on a harness woven from cargo webbing. The port officer looked at her, then at me, and asked for her papers. I handed over the only document I had, a scrap of flimsy with my name and one line in my own handwriting saying she was mine to keep. Her stripes ran down her flanks like ink on frost, and her eyes stayed blue all the way to the bottom of the ramp.
