Realistic tiger head on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo of a tiger's head faces forward on the outer thigh, with its ears, stripes, whiskers and direct gaze rendered in fine detail. The work relies on smooth, layered grey shading and high contrast to give the fur depth and a lifelike texture. The photograph is black and white and softly lit against a dark background, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The Vesey Brothers' travelling show came through in September with a real Bengal called Sultan, an old cat with a torn ear and a pelt gone dull at the shoulders. Mr Vesey wanted him on the floor between sets, so for one Saturday the band played slow foxtrots while the animal paced behind a rope of brass rail. Nobody danced. Every couple kept one eye on those yellow eyes and the other on the exit.
Halfway through the evening Sultan stopped pacing, sat down beside the bandstand, and looked straight across the hall at me. I'd been told tigers won't hold a stare, that they look away first to save face. He didn't. I stood there with the torch gone cold in my hand while the trumpet went on about moonlight, and I understood he was only waiting to see whether I would be the one to blink.
I didn't blink. Then Ada came over to say a boy from the fish quay had got the coal chute open, and I went, leaving the tiger to his patience. I kept nothing from that night. But the following winter I drew Sultan's face from memory on the back of a ticket stub, and got the whiskers right, though I never did get the eyes.
