Black and grey realistic tattoo of a tiger's head with lotus flowers on the forearm, shown against a dark background.

Tiger head and lotus on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic tiger's head with a direct gaze fills the centre of the forearm, with fur rendered through fine, layered strokes and soft grey shading. Large lotus flowers wrap the lower arm and the top edge, with petals shaded in smooth gradients from light to dark. The dark background keeps the focus on the tattoo, and the arm runs vertically through the frame.

Wen Liang had been ordered to paint the tiger from life, so for nine mornings he sat outside the iron bars of the menagerie behind the granary, grinding ink on a flat stone while the beast slept with one eye open. The keeper, old Hu, said the animal only looked at a man once it had decided he was worth the trouble. Wen Liang did not argue. He thinned his greys until the silk took only a breath of colour, and he waited.

The magistrate wanted lotus as well, for the garden pond that had been dry since the summer drought. Wen Liang painted the flowers first, the great cupped petals shaded from pale to near black, each one laid over the last until the paper seemed to hold water. He worked the leaves from the bottom of the scroll upward, so the blossoms rose out of the dark like something surfacing. Hu said the lotus was easy and the tiger was not, and Wen Liang agreed with him.

On the tenth morning the tiger rose, pressed its broad face against the bars, and looked straight at him. He did not look away. He dipped the brush and drew the stripes along the muzzle in quick, dry strokes, letting the hairs fan out where the ink bled into the silk, and the eyes came last, two points of light left unpainted in the middle of all that grey.

The scroll hung in the magistrate's hall beside a screen of pale reeds, and for a week nobody mentioned the fee. Then a clerk came to the granary with a purse and found Wen Liang asleep on the stone, one cheek resting near the cold ink, while the tiger in the next cage paced in the lamplight and the lotus on the scroll kept its quiet shape against the dark.
