Snarling tiger head on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large tiger head snarls towards the viewer, with bared fangs, a wide open mouth and narrowed eyes. The shading is smooth and detailed, with fine whisker lines and dark stripes across the forehead and muzzle, and the design continues down the arm into darker fur-like strokes. The image is shot close and tightly framed on a dark background, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The tiger came to Harrowgate Fair the summer the river froze in July, and nobody believed Mother Quenby when she said it had been sent to collect a debt. She kept it in a cage of ash poles behind the coconut shy, and paid it in raw mutton and old pennies. I was eleven and carried water for the strongman, so it was my job to fill the trough each dusk while the lamps were lit along the Midway.

It never once looked at the crowd. It looked at me, though, every evening, with its eyes narrowed to the thinnest slits, as if it were reading a letter it already knew by heart. On the last night of the fair, Mother Quenby came round with her lantern and told me the tiger had a name, and that I was to say it back to her before I could have the gate key. I said the only name I could think of, which was the name of my dead brother, Tobias. The cage door swung open on its own.

The tiger did not leap at me. It stepped out slowly, wide mouth open, fangs bright in the lamplight, and it breathed out a long grey breath that smelled of wet bark and rain. Then it turned and walked straight through the gap between the tents towards the river, and the stripes on its flanks ran down into the dark like water running off a roof.

In the morning the fairground was empty and the ice had gone from the river. On the bank lay a boy's blue wool cap, dry as a bone, and beside it a single set of enormous paw prints leading back into the reeds, each one filled with ash.
