Tiger face on upper back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A large tiger face fills the upper back and looks straight at the viewer, with amber eyes under heavy black brow markings. Feathered strokes and soft shading build the fur in orange, black, white and grey, with a pink nose at the centre. The muzzle and whiskers fade into the surrounding skin, giving a blended, photographic finish against a dark background.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the lamp. You want the tiger of Marrowmere, the one that would not look away. In the old kingdom of Ysolde, where the river Tamb came down through the reeds, there was a magistrate named Osric Penhallow who had sworn he could outstare any beast in the province. He had stared down a horse-thief, a bishop and a bailiff's wife, and he was proud of it.

One wet autumn the magistrate was sent into the marshes to settle a quarrel between two villages over a drowned sheep. He came upon a great striped cat sitting on a fallen oak, its amber eyes set under those black brows like two coins in a purse. He thought to frighten it with his staff. It did not move. It only looked at him, long and patient, until the rain ran off his hat and down his collar, and the reeds went quiet all around.

He stood there so long that the tide came in and the bailiff came looking, and they found him still standing, eyes wide and watering, while the cat lay with its chin on its paws and its whiskers trembling in the damp. Penhallow never said who won. But he stopped sending men into the marshes after sheep, and every spring after, he left a dish of cream on that oak. Now hush, and pass the bread. That is the whole of it, and the cat has not blinked yet.
