The goods train was already slowing for the bend when you saw her step out of the bamboo, as if the grove had decided to walk. Mrs Okonkwo's lamp swung on its hook beside you, and the signal wire hummed the way it always did before a fault. You put your hand flat on the lever and did not pull it.

She crossed the sleepers without hurry. Orange in the lamplight, striped like the shadows of the stalks, her mouth open a little as if she were tasting the diesel and the wet ferns. The lads on the platform below had gone silent. Somebody dropped a tea urn and it rang off the iron rails like a bell nobody wanted to answer.
You had worked this halt for nineteen years and never once seen a tiger on the line. The stationmaster would want a form filled in. The timetable would want a stop. What you wanted, standing there with your palm on cold metal, was for those green eyes to pass over you and go on into the pale flowers along the cutting, the blossoms the old women called moon ginger.
She stopped at the points, looked back once at you, and then she was gone into the leaves. The train came round the bend a full minute late. Nobody on it ever knew why. You kept the logbook, though, and in the margin for that night you wrote only: crossing clear.
