Realistic warrior helmet and eyes on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a close, detailed view of a warrior wearing a metal helmet, with one blue eye and part of the brow visible beneath the rim. The helmet has weathered, textured bronze and dark brown shading, and the skin tones use soft gradients to suggest depth and form. The design fills the upper body area of the image, with the arm running horizontally across the frame against a pale background.

Dear Mam, the smith on Harrow has finished the helmet at last, and I have spent the whole afternoon turning it over in my hands while the tide went out beneath the harbour wall. It is heavier than it looks. The bronze has gone the colour of wet bark where the salt gets in, and Oswin hammered the brow into a ridge so deep that it throws a shadow over the eyeholes even at noon.

He says that is the point. A man in a helmet like this should be a face nobody wants to meet, and the eyes have to show, or the lads in the line lose their nerve. So he left two openings, rimmed them with a band of worn copper, and set a little blue glass behind each one so that when the sun catches it there is something looking back at you from the dark.
Captain Brack asked for it to be dented before it was delivered. Oswin refused at first, then gave in, and now there is a crease over the left cheek-guard from a stone thrown at the Lindos boats last summer. Brack says the dent is his, that every mark on it belongs to someone who came home. I did not argue with him. I only noticed he touched it before he put it on, the way you might touch a door frame before you walk out of a house you do not expect to see again.
The ferry leaves at six tomorrow. I have packed the helmet in oiled wool and I will carry it down to the quay myself, because Brack cannot manage the steps with his knee. Give Nan my love, and tell the goats I am sorry about the gate.
