Skull and woman silhouette in realism

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A large skull fills the centre of the tattoo, with a woman's head, long hair and outstretched arm appearing within and around its shape. The shading is soft and detailed, with smooth grey gradients and fine stippled textures that create depth across the bone and figure. The image is a close, tightly cropped photograph in black and grey tones against a blurred neutral background.

Dearest Ysolde, forgive the smudged ink. I am writing at the bench in the Hall of Bones, where the lamp smokes and the apprentices pretend not to listen. You asked me last winter whether the Ashmere custom of drawing the living inside the skull was true or only a tale to frighten children. It is true. I watched it done today, and my hands have not stopped shaking.

Master Oswin took the commission from the widow Halwen, who wanted her husband kept in the Tallow Gallery with his face still in him. He would not let me near the brushes. For six hours he worked with a single sable hair, stippling the bone grey until the dead man's jaw looked carved from cloud. Then he turned to the widow herself, who sat in the corner with her hands folded. He drew her hair sweeping down past the temple, and when she lifted one arm to ask for water, he told her to hold it exactly so.

When the drawing was finished, the arm reached out from the shadow of the eye socket, fingers trailing over the cheekbone as though feeling for a door. The widow wept and paid in silver. Oswin only shrugged and said the bone had always had her in it. He had only made the shadows honest.

I walked down to the river after dark and thought about that. I believe I will ask him to teach me the stippling. Write back soon, and tell Mother the lamp is kept lit for us both. Your loving brother, Piers.
