Peace sign with American flag on ribs
Ribs · Colour · Photo
A peace symbol inside a circle, outlined in black, is filled with the stripes and stars of the American flag. The stars and stripes are shaded in flat red, white and blue, with the black linework kept clean and even. The design sits centrally on the side of the torso, with a grey top visible above it.

The snow had sealed the Hollin Pass for four days, and by the third night the guests had run out of conversation and started reading the menu aloud. Dad stood on a bar stool with a tin of leftover paint from the summer, scraping at the old board above the fireplace, while I held the torch. "It's a daft thing to do with a stranger's paint," he said, which was fair. The stranger was Teddy Marsh, a haulier stuck since Tuesday, who had sworn he could paint anything and then spent an hour refusing to say what.

He sketched a circle in pencil on the back of a bar bill, then the peace sign inside it, the three lines fanning out like a bird's foot. Then he tore the bill in half and said it needed to be the flag, because his daughter had asked him once why people put stripes on everything and he had never given her a proper answer. Red stripes ran from the rim inwards, with white gaps the width of a thumb. The blue corner took the stars, which he stamped on with the end of a wine cork. Each one needed two goes. Dad said the stripes were crooked. Teddy said the snow was crooked, and nobody could argue with that.
The lounge went quiet as the paint dried. A couple from room four came down in their dressing gowns to look, and the bloke from the cattle lorry said it was the first peace sign he had seen that a man could salute. Nobody laughed.
By morning the council plough had cleared the gate and the road below was a long grey ribbon. Teddy was gone, leaving a single pound coin on the bar with a note that read for the paint. The circle stayed on the wall above the fire, its stripes still bright, and when the first car came grinding up the hill I watched it slow at the bend to read the sign before it turned in.
