Cartoon figure in striped shirt on abdomen
Other · Mixed · Photo
A small cartoon figure in a red and white striped top, red bobble hat and round glasses waves with one hand. The figure is drawn with black outlines and filled with red and white, and it appears to peek up from the edge of the waistband of the jeans. The image is a close crop of the lower abdomen, with a navel piercing visible above the tattoo.

The third lost umbrella of the morning was wedged behind a lighthouse keeper's bicycle, and Ferdie Quill would have spotted it sooner had the keeper stopped whistling the same four bars of a sea shanty. Ferdie tutted, tugged his red bobble hat down over his ears and tapped the brolly with his pencil. "Found you," he said, though nobody was there to hear but the gulls.

Gullsmouth Lost Property occupied the back room of the ferry office, a space no bigger than a rowing boat, stacked to the rafters with gloves, teddy bears, a tuba nobody had claimed since 1987 and one wooden leg. Ferdie's rule was simple: a lost thing is always hiding in plain sight, and a good seeker looks where everyone else steps over. He had never once failed, and he kept a spare striped jumper in his drawer to prove it.
On the last Thursday of October, Mrs Pell arrived with a shoebox and a scarf inside it, half knitted in red and white stripes. "My husband went out on the Mary Jane in March," she said. "He took the other end with him." Ferdie walked the harbour wall with his magnifying glass, past the bunting, past the chip shop, past two pigeons arguing over a crust, until he found a loose strand snagged on a bollard, dangling over the tide and tied in a neat bow.
He wound the wool back into a ball, counting every stitch, and carried it up the hill. Mrs Pell took it without a word. Ferdie waved from the gate, as he always did when a case was closed, and for once the wave came back, a small hand lifting at the upstairs window, and he could not have said which of them was more surprised.
