Realistic wolf face on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A wolf's head is tattooed on the forearm, with the muzzle and dark nose toward the wrist and the ears at the top of the arm. The fur is built up with fine, soft-edged shading in greys and browns, with some darker speckling and purple tones around the edges. The two side-by-side photographs show the same piece from slightly different angles against a dark, patterned background.

You are the night porter at Harrowgate Road halt, and the only thing that ever waits on platform two after the last southbound is the wolf. Nobody else sees it climb up from the drainage cut below the goods yard. It sits where the timetable board's light doesn't reach, grey at the ruff and darker along the spine, and it watches the empty rails the way a clerk watches a clock.

The first winter you tried to shoo it. You swept at it with a yard broom and it simply turned its head, slowly, and looked at you with eyes so blue they seemed lit from inside, like the root of a gas flame. You stopped swinging the broom. You began leaving a flask of tea on the bench, and in the mornings the flask would be empty, its lid set neatly beside it.
In March the company announced the line would close. The wolf came every night anyway, nose low near the tracks, breathing out long clouds into the lamplight. You found yourself talking to it: the 6.14 is cancelled, the rain has come sideways again, your brother rang about the allotment. It listened the way nothing else in that town ever had.
On the final night the platform was full of people with cardboard boxes, and the wolf did not come. You stood alone under the lamp at quarter to midnight and heard, far down the cutting, one long howl that rose, held, and ended as the last train crossed the points. When you looked up the bench was bare, and in the frost along the sleepers there was a line of prints leading away from the rails and into the trees.
