Realistic wolf head tattoo on a finger

Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf's head facing forward is tattooed on the side of a finger, with the muzzle, eyes and ears clearly shown. The fur is built up with soft grey shading and fine dark strokes, giving a realistic, sculpted look. The design fills the finger width and sits against the pale skin of the hand, which is shown in the foreground.

The wolf had been standing at the edge of Hollin Wood for three mornings before my father thought to count the sheep. He was nine short of the ewes he had penned on Sunday. He came in cold, stamped the frost from his boots and sat at the table without taking off his cap, which was how I knew he had already decided something.

The men gathered at the Black Swan that night with their lamps and their dogs. I watched from the lych gate. Mrs Tennant's boy said the animal had a grey coat and stood as still as a carved post, and that when it turned its head the lamplight caught one eye and not the other. Nobody argued with him. Nobody liked to think of a thing that patient looking back.

I went up alone before dawn with a tin of bread and my grandmother's knife. The frost lay thick on the bracken, and the wolf was there, sitting in the mouth of the path where the beeches begin. Its ears were up and its muzzle was dark with age. I set the bread down halfway between us and said what my grandmother used to say to anything she was afraid of: that I had come to bargain, not to take.

It ate the bread. By morning the missing ewes were in the top field, every one of them, and the men called it luck and went back to their beds. I still walk up to the beeches on the first hard frost. There is always a print pressed into the white at the tree line, one broad pad and four heavy toes, and always a single grey hair caught on the bark, which I keep in an envelope in the drawer beside the knife.
