A small wolf head faces forward at the centre of the image, with pointed ears, a dark nose and shaded eyes. It had boarded at the stop outside the shuttered chemist with the unhurried air of someone who had paid years ago. Its coat was the colour of wet slate, darker along the ridge of its back and paling to ash around the muzzle. When we swung onto Stockport Road it turned its head to the window and watched the sodium lamps go by one at a time, and each one caught in its eyes and held there a moment longer than seemed reasonable.

At Gorton I asked it, because the silence had grown heavy, where it was headed. It looked at me the way my nan used to look at a man who had said something foolish in the pub. Then it stood, shook off a little rain I had not seen fall, and walked to the front doors and waited for me to open them. I did. The cold came in with the smell of pine and wet fur, and the wolf stepped down onto Hyde Road as if it knew the way.

At the depot Dennis asked why the back seat was damp. I said someone had spilt something. In the morning I went up to the top deck to check, and on the rail by the window there was a single grey hair, long and pale at the tip. I put it in my pocket. I still have it, and some nights I feel it press against my leg as I drive, and I keep my eyes on the road.
