Realistic wolf head above a silhouette scene
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large wolf head with detailed fur, a direct gaze and soft shading fills the upper part of the limb. Below it, a dark silhouette of animals stands against a pale, hazy landscape. The work is entirely in black and grey, with strong contrast between the dense shadows of the wolf and the lighter background.

The wolf comes down the ridge road at the hour when the lamps start to fail, and you are the only one at the barrier who sees it. Your torch finds the eyes first, pale as the sodium glow on wet tarmac, and then the rest of it: a grey coat gone silver at the ruff, head low, not hurrying. The lorry drivers are asleep in their cabs. Nobody else looks up.

You have a form on the clipboard for everything except this. Name, nationality, purpose of crossing. The wolf stops at the white line painted across the road, exactly where the two countries agree the grass begins, and waits as though it has read the sign. Beyond it, down the slope where the mist lies flat over the water meadows, two shapes stand in the haze: a stag with its head raised, and something smaller pressed against its flank. Neither moves. The whole valley seems to be holding its breath.
Pryce rings through from the hut at ten past three asking why the barrier is still down. You tell him there is nothing to stamp. He says the regulations do not cover wildlife. You say no, they do not, and put the phone down, and when you look again the white line is empty and the meadow is only mist.
In the morning the log shows one entry in your handwriting: Crossings, none. In the box for remarks you have written what the form has no room for. One animal, unhurried, going the way it was always going. Let it through.
