Brushstroke wolf head on a lower arm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf's head faces forward with its ears raised, drawn with loose, dark brushstrokes and soft grey wash. Heavy black marks bleed outwards and downwards from the head, while lighter grey streaks fade into the skin at the edges. The design fills the centre of the frame against a dark grey background.

The ink arrives on Skarra in an unlabelled tin, carried up from the mainland boat by a man who won't say which kiln burned the pine. You sign for it on the quay with the wind snapping the tarpaulin over the fish crates, then carry it up the hill to the old boathouse where your father kept his brushes. Nobody on the island has painted anything in eleven years. The last painter, Ailsa Dunn, walked out onto the moor one February and was not seen again.

The wolves were gone before your grandmother's time, the minister said, but in January tracks appeared along the dunes, big and splayed, and the sheep on the north side stopped grazing. You set the tin on the bench and prise off the lid. The ink is black as a rook's wing, thick enough to hold the brush upright. You wet a sheet of rice paper and drop the first stroke for the ears, and the paper takes it like a breath.
By dusk there is a head: ears raised, muzzle turned toward the window as if it has heard something on the path. You keep the wash pale at the throat and let the dark run down past the jaw in drips, the way ink does when the hand hesitates. Outside, something pads along the wall and stops at the door. You do not look up. You know the sound of a creature listening, because you have been listening too.
At midnight the paper is dry and the wolf is only grey wash now. But the drips have bled through to the bench, and there in the grain is the same head, facing you, its eyes two dots of pine soot. In the morning the door stands open, the tin is empty, and the shore is printed with pads that stop where the tide came in. The paper on the bench is blank again, as if nothing was ever painted on it at all.
