Fox and laurel on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A fox with a detailed head and shaded fur sits in the upper forearm, framed by sprigs of laurel leaves. Below it, sweeping, feathered linework curves down the arm and suggests a flowing tail or wing, with a small swirl visible at the bottom edge. The photograph is black and white, so the ink appears as black and grey shading against the skin.

Dear Win,

You will not believe what has been going on at Hollins Cross since the thaw. Mr Varley came into the sorting office on Tuesday with his hat in both hands and said the vixen had been sleeping under his laurel hedge for a week, and would I please come and look, because he was not having a fox in his garden and nobody would believe him otherwise. So I went up after my round with the bag still on my shoulder.

She was lying in the clipped branches with her brush wrapped round her feet like a scarf, the colour of a wet autumn leaf, and she watched me the way the Vicar watches the collection plate. Varley wanted me to shoo her. I did not. I sat on the wall and ate my sandwiches and she ate nothing, and after a while she got up, stretched longer than seemed possible, and walked off down the lane towards the mill with her tail trailing behind her like a long pale ribbon of smoke.

Now here is the thing. Two nights later the bonfire at the allotments went up, and in the orange light I could have sworn that same tail lifted off the grass and curled over the fence, feathered at the edges, and then it was gone into the dark.

I have not told anyone but you. Varley has put a saucer of milk under the hedge. I think she has got what she came for.

Love, Edie
