It sat on a stand in the window, a band of rust and charcoal quills rising from a cap of brushed felt, the tips fanning toward the floor like a tide going out. Passersby asked the price. She told them it was a favour owed to her sister, who had sailed to Lisbon in 1961 and never written back. Mrs Carr said this with her hands busy at the sewing machine, never once looking up.
A man in a grey coat came in on a Tuesday, the week the wind turned east, and asked for the hat by name. He had seen it in the glass from across the road. He had a photograph in his pocket of a woman wearing something much like it, standing on a pier with gulls around her feet. Mrs Carr took the photograph, turned it over, and read the pencilled date on the back. Then she lifted the hat from its stand and set it on the counter between them, quills first, the way you would lay out a tray of warm bread.
"Take it," she said. "She'd want it worn, not kept." Outside, a single feather lifted off the wet pavement and rode the wind down towards the sea.
