Realistic woman portrait with pink glasses on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A woman with an updo hairstyle, pink-framed glasses and red lips is rendered as a portrait, with a dark top at the shoulder and a few drops of earring visible. The face uses smooth, blended shading with soft highlights, while the hair is built from layered brown and blond strokes. Colour dominates in skin tones, red and pink, with blue wash splashes behind the figure; the photo shows the same forearm tattoo twice side by side.

Dear Mags, you'll laugh when you see I've gone and bought the pink frames from the optician on Fenwick Road, the ones with the little diamanté at the hinge. Mr Pryce said two guineas was a waste for a girl who only reads the bus timetables, but I told him a dance hall is no place to squint at the band.

Last Saturday at the Palais, the bandleader called for requests and nobody would partner me until a sailor off the Gallant asked if I'd mind terribly if he trod on my feet. I said he could tread all he liked so long as his hands stayed where his mother would approve. He had shovel hands and a laugh like a foghorn, and by the third number he'd told me all of Portsmouth while I'd told him nothing at all, which he seemed to prefer.

During the interval I caught myself in the cloakroom mirror: the pink rims, my hair pinned up the way Vera showed us, a smear of cherry lipstick I hadn't meant to leave on my teeth. Outside, the sea was going blue under the lamps, and someone had spilt cordial across the gravel so it ran in long pale tongues. I looked like a woman who had decided something, though I couldn't have told you what.

I'm writing this on the back of the programme while the sailor fetches me a lemonade. Keep my room warm and don't let Mother read this one out loud. I'll tell you the rest when I'm home.
