Red and black brush swirl on the chest

Chest · Mixed · Photo

A loose circular swirl sits on the upper chest, drawn with a bold red arc and a black brushed spiral with scattered black dots. Red wash and splatter marks fill the centre, giving a painterly, abstract effect. The image is a close crop of bare skin and a light strapless top against a pale painted background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ink went over before my father could catch the jar, and it ran across the lamp-room boards in a red tongue, then a black one, and pooled where the brushes had been soaking. He swore in Welsh, which he only did when the mine was to blame and he had nobody to shout at but the weather.

We were making signal discs for the Tredaw shaft, round tin boards the men hung at the cage so the banksman could read the level without a word. Father said nobody trusts a square sign in the dark. A circle can be turned and still mean the same thing. So I took the spilled ink and the brush he had told me never to use for lettering, and I drew the way the water goes down the gully behind our row, round and round until the centre forgot where it started.

He came back from the cage that evening with his cap in his hands and a cut over one eye, and said nothing about it. He looked at the disc on the sill for a long time. The red arc had dried thin at the edge where I lifted the brush too fast, and the black spiral sat inside it like a seam of coal that had turned over in its sleep. Dots from the flicked brush scattered across the middle, a dozen little embers.

When the sun came in low across the yard it caught the varnish I had brushed over the top, and the whole disc threw a red bloom onto the wall. Father put his thumb on the splatter, very gently, the way you test a stove. Then he hung it on the nail beside the door, where the men would see it first going down.
