Small realistic tattoo of a cratered moon in orange, red and dark tones, placed on the upper chest near the collarbone.

Realistic moon on upper chest

Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo

A small circular tattoo of a moon sits on the upper chest, just below the collarbone, of a person wearing an open white shirt and a thin chain necklace. The surface shows soft, blended shading in orange, rust and pink, with dark grey and near-black patches that suggest craters and maria. The plain white clothing and dark background keep the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Tamsin Reach would lend a boat after dark until the moon had been fed. That was the rule the sea-wives kept, and Ada Corran, who was nine and impatient, thought it was foolishness until the night her father's boat failed to come home.

The moon that year was the colour of a rusted hinge, low over the grey water, with dark blots on her face where the old sky-machines had burned. Her grandmother said the blots were the shadows of the drowned, pressed flat by the moon's own weight. Ada had never seen a drowned man, only the moon, so she took the bowl of salt and the bread up the cliff path without asking what the moon ate.

At the top she found the grandmother already kneeling, palm pressed to the cold stone. Plainly, the old woman said the moon wanted a thing that cost you, not a thing you could spare. Ada thought of her new knife, her best boots, the silver hook her mother had given her. She set down the bread instead, and the salt, and then she set down her own name, spoken aloud, the way you would hand over a coin.

The moon rose a shade paler. Below, a single lamp swung out from the rocks, then another, and her father's boat came round the point with the tide behind it. Ada never told him what she had given. She only knew that after that night the moon's dark face looked a little more like her own.
