Red and black spider emblem on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a spider with a web pattern in black linework, set over loose red ink washes that form a splashed background shape. The left photo is a close crop of the skin, and the right photo shows the design on a forearm against a dark sleeve. The ink is solid and fairly bold, with the red and black areas overlapping in places.

Dear Ruth, I know you'll laugh at me for writing a letter when we could have talked at the buffet, but I didn't trust myself to say it out loud with a paper plate of cold sausage rolls in my hand. You asked who painted the spider on the gym wall in Year Eleven. It was me, and Gordon Pike held the ladder and told me it looked like a squashed moth.

We had two weeks and one tin of red emulsion that Mr Okafor found in the caretaker's cupboard. The web was my idea, drawn with a ruler and a stub of chalk, but the red was an accident. On the last Friday Gordon knocked the tin with his heel and it went across the boards in one great slap, and we stood there certain we'd be expelled. Mr Okafor came in, looked at it for a long time, and said, leave it, it's the only honest thing in this building.
Last month they knocked the old gym down for the new science block. I drove past on the Tuesday and the spider was still there under a layer of grey dust, one black leg poking out at the corner where the render had already cracked. I pulled into the lay-by and sat for ten minutes with the engine running. I didn't get out. I just wanted to see whether the red had lasted.
It had. I've enclosed a photo, though you'll have to squint, the glare off the windscreen ruined the first one. Come up on the bus with me next Saturday and we'll find Gordon and make him tell the moth story again. Yours, Pip.
