Spider-Man crouching on upper back
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo depicts Spider-Man in a crouched pose with both arms stretched out to the sides and legs bent beneath him. It uses bold black outlines with a web pattern shaded across the red suit and solid blue for the trousers and arms. The figure is centred on the upper back of a person whose head and hair are visible at the top of the frame.

Dear Ruth, you will never guess what Albie Pryce did at the Saturday matinee. The lights had barely dimmed at the Palace when a figure came over the back of the stalls and hung on the top rail with his knees bent and both arms flung out, like a man who had been thrown there and decided to stay. Mr Hebden stopped the reel. Nobody could tell at first whether it was a boy or a joke, until Albie climbed down grinning, his red jumper pulled over his head and a web of black wool stitched across the front.

He had copied the pose from the back page of his comic, the one he keeps under his pillow. For three weeks he drew it in the margins of his arithmetic book, the same crouch and the same splayed fingers, until Miss Dunn confiscated the book and found the whole class's sums turned into one hero. She kept the last drawing, Mum says, folded in her cardigan pocket, and I think she has been looking at it since.
Mrs Pryce was ready to skin him, but Albie's gran, who has never once set foot in the pictures, told her the crouch was not for leaping at all. It was for waiting, she said, for the moment before the thing comes to you. Albie has not stopped crouching since. He sits on the back step with his knees up and his arms wide, watching the lane for the bus that never comes.
I walked past him this morning. The sun sat low over the chapel roof and his shadow sprawled across the whitewashed wall, long and thin, arms like wire. I did not tell him it was the best thing I had seen all summer. I am telling you instead.
