Chibi Spider-Man on an upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large-headed cartoon Spider-Man in red and blue swings across the skin, with one arm extended and a thin web line trailing down to the lower right. The linework is bold and black, with simple flat shading and white eye highlights. Red and blue ink dominate against the pale skin, and the figure sits centred on a close crop of the upper arm.

The Halloran Bros. Travelling Show had lost its elephant to a farmer in Shropshire and its strongman to a bigger show in Leeds, and by the wet end of October only one tent was left standing, patched with feed sacks. Nell Doyle, who was nine and could hang by her knees from the guy ropes, kept the last of the sawdust swept into a heap so the ringmaster could pretend there was still an audience to sweep for.

Her grandmother had sewn her a little man the winter the show came through Crewe, red for his head and body, blue for his arms and legs, two white buttons for eyes that were too big for his face. Black thread made a web across his skull. He swings where you can't, her grandmother had said, and Nell tucked him into her coat pocket, where he stayed through every wet town since.
On the night the storm came over the Wrekin, the centre pole cracked and the canvas began to lift like a sail. The men were down in the mud with the stakes. Nell climbed the rigging with the little man buttoned in her pocket, though nobody had told her to, and found the loose ring that held the sagging line. She tied it off with a knot she had learned from a monkey called Pilot. Then she hung there, one arm flung out the way he was made, and the tent settled.
In the morning the ringmaster found a thread of black cord hanging from the top of the pole, fine as a hair, looping down past the rigging to the sawdust. Nobody took it down. The show packed up in Telford that week, and Nell kept the cord in her pocket beside the little man, a long grey line she could follow back to wherever the tent had stood.
