Red and blue offset outline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo is a single abstract shape drawn as two offset outlines, one blue and one red, with a few short prongs on the left side. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the two colours overlap and separate to suggest a doubled image. It is photographed at close range on the inner forearm against a dark blue textured background.

"Misregistration," she said. "That's what the lads at the Co-op will call it when the wedding invitations come back looking drunk."
He pinned the sheet to the drying line anyway. The shape was the one she had cut for the ferry company, a kite of a thing, pointed at the top and the bottom, with three little barbs on one side where the fletching of an arrow would sit. Blue was the true run, the one the engraver had made. Red was the second pass, taken from the same plate after the press had been knocked by a delivery van on the Tuesday and nobody had thought to check it.
Ruth lifted the proof off the line and held it to the window. In the grey light the two outlines stopped looking like a mistake. The red one sat a finger's width to the right, as if it had turned round to see where it had come from, and the blue leaned forward to meet it.
"Print it again," she said. "Don't fix the register. Sell them both as a pair."
