Clothes hanger outline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black fine line traces the outline of a clothes hanger, with a hook at the top and a triangular body below. The lines are even and unshaded, with a small coiled detail where the hook meets the frame. The skin is pale and the background shows printed paper and a wooden surface, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

The dry cleaner on Harrow Lane had three hundred wire hangers and only one that never tangled. Maureen Tully kept it on the hook by the till, the one with the little coil at its neck where someone had once bent it back into shape with pliers. She said it was the only honest thing in the shop, because it held exactly what it was given and nothing more.

Her nephew Declan came in on a wet Thursday with a navy wool coat over his arm, the lining torn at the shoulder. He had been living in a rented room above the bookmaker's since March, and he said the coat was his father's. Maureen did not ask whose it was. She took the coat, ran her thumb along the seam, and reached for the honest hanger without being told.
The repair took eleven days. Declan came back each evening after his shifts at the depot and stood by the counter while she stitched, pretending to read the notices about collection dates. On the last evening the coat hung from the honest hanger under the strip light, the wool brushed and the lining whole again, and the wire triangle above its shoulders looked almost proud of itself.
He paid, didn't fold anything, and carried the coat out over his arm the way he had come in. Maureen watched him cross the road under a borrowed umbrella. When she turned back, the hanger was swaying gently on its hook, empty and patient, and she left it there, because a hanger that has done its work should be allowed to wait for the next one.
