Small safety pin tattoo on the arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small safety pin is drawn in thin, dark ink on the outer side of a light-skinned arm. The linework is delicate and uneven in places, with the coil and clasp suggested by a few curved strokes and no shading. The tattoo is shown in black ink on a soft-focus background, with a bright red fabric filling the right side of the frame.

The sail tore at four bells in the middle watch, somewhere south of the Azores, and by the time you reached the foredeck the wind had already taken a yard of canvas and was working at the rest. Bosun Hallam was swearing in Welsh. You had a sailmaker's palm strapped to one hand and nothing in your pockets but a stub of pencil and a tin of safety pins your mother had pushed into your kit bag at Southampton, saying a ship was only a hundred pieces of cloth that had agreed to stay together.

Nobody wanted to hear about the tin. The crew wanted needles and waxed twine, and you gave them those, but the rip along the reef points would not hold a stitch in the wet. So you knelt on the red oilskin with the faded shipping line stamp and began pinning the edges together, one clasp at a time, the coil snapping shut under your thumb. Hallam watched with his arms folded. "Those are for nappies," he said. "They're for keeping things from coming apart," you told him, and pinned the next.
By dawn the sail held enough to haul. Forty-one pins, most of them spotted with rust by morning, and the canvas bellied out clean as the wind came round to the west. Hallam did not say well done. He took one pin from your fingers, turned it over in the grey light, and tucked it inside his collar.
At Lisbon he handed the tin back with one pin missing. You never asked where it had gone, but on the last night of the voyage, when the crew was paid off and you were walking down the gangway with your bag over your shoulder, you saw him at the rail, a torn cuff clipped shut with a small bent pin, the same one you had watched him take.
