Red and teal flower mandala on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A circular flower design sits at the centre of the image, with red petals surrounding a pale ring and a teal and orange floral centre. Green and orange leaves radiate outwards around the edge, all enclosed in bold black outlines. The solid colour fills are bright and even, and the design is framed by the forearm against a red brick wall, with another dark tattoo partly visible at the top right.

Dear Margaret,

The bed by platform four came up this morning, the first of the dahlias, red as a pillar box and so tight-petalled that Mr Okafor says they look sewn. I have been trying to work out how to tell you what I did with the middle. You will laugh. I took the last tin of paint from the signal box, the one Ted kept for the lamp posts, and mixed it with the blue left over from the waiting room. It came out the colour of the sea off Scarborough on a cold day.

The stationmaster wanted the bed bare for the summer timetable. He said flowers distracted the drivers. So I went out at six with a trowel and dug a circle, not a square, and set the petals round it like the spokes of a wheel. Orange where the sun hits the brick, green at the edge where the hedge meets the fence. Nobody on the platform has noticed yet. The 7.14 to Leeds went past and the guard leaned out of his window and looked, then looked again.

I have decided I will not tell him until the first frost. Then he will have to dig it up himself, and by then the drivers will have grown fond of it, and he will be too ashamed to say a word.

Write soon, and tell me the coast is still as you left it.

Yours in muddy boots, Eileen
