Sunflower with swirls and leaves
Botanical · Colour · Flash
The drawing shows a large sunflower with a dark, textured centre and layered yellow petals, shaded with darker ochre along their edges. Two green leaves and thin, curling grey-green scrolls frame the flower on either side. The design is set on a plain white background, with the outlines and shading drawn in a fine, controlled pencil-like style.

Hold that rope still, girl, and mind your feet on the wet planks, because if you go in after the cat you'll not be coming out before Thursday. Right. Now listen. My father bought a tin of sunflower seed off a stall in Hull the spring the lock keeper's wife ran off with the wool merchant, and he planted it in a cracked bucket on the cabin roof of the Marigold Tern, just to have something yellow to look at while we waited out the flood at Stanwick.

It grew faster than the weeds on the towpath. By midsummer its head was as wide as a cartwheel and the petals had gone the colour of the lamp oil, edged in that dark ochre like burnt toast. Every morning it turned to follow the sun across the water, and every evening it turned back, slow as a barge being hauled upstream. The curling green tendrils wound themselves round the chimney and the mooring cleat as if they wanted to hold the boat to the bank. My father said they were the eddies below the weir, come up to keep us company.
In October the head bowed and dropped, and the seeds went down into the river, every last black one of them. We thought that was the end of it. Then in the spring a boy fishing for eels found a single yellow head standing in the reeds below Stanwick, turned towards the sun like it had been waiting there all winter for somebody to come back for it.
So when you're steering this old tub past that bend, don't look at the water. Look up at the bank. That's where we left the sun, and it's still facing us.
