Red bird with spread wings on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo
A small stylised bird with outstretched wings and a tapering tail is tattooed on the inside of a wrist. The linework is thin and tapered, with the wing feathers drawn as flame-like strokes. The design is done in red and orange ink on a plain background of skin and fabric.

The clerk at Wrenfield stamps your papers twice, the second time without looking up, and slides them back beneath the glass. Past the barrier the lamps of the far town are already lit, low and orange, like coals someone has forgotten to rake. You fold the permit into your coat and feel the thin paper bird inside it, its wings worn soft at the creases from three winters of handling.

Your grandmother made the first one on the back of a ration card the year the mill burned. She said the fire had not taken everything; it had only lifted the birds out of the rafters and set them loose over the river, and any child who folded one properly could call a lost one home. You never believed her. You folded them anyway, long tails pinched sharp so they would hold a draught, and you kept the best one for this crossing, its wing tips smudged to rust by her thumb.
The strip of ground between the gates is wider than it looks at night. A dog barks somewhere behind the wire, a lorry idles with its lights off, and the wind carries the smell of wet coal from the rail sidings. Halfway across, the paper begins to feel warm against your palm, the way a stove does when no one has lit it. You do not stop walking. Stopping is what the men with torches are watching for.
At the far gate a young guard holds out his hand and asks what you are carrying. You tell him paper, and nothing he needs. He unfolds the bird anyway, frowns at its scorched-looking wings, and turns it over. Then he hands it back without a word, and somewhere in the sidings a single ember lifts off the heap, drifts upward, red, and then gone.
