Winged heart wrist tattoo

Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A heart with spread feathered wings wraps across the wrist, with a white heart at the centre outlined in black. The wings use black and grey shading, white highlights along the feather edges and thick black outlines. The photo is taken straight on against a pink wall, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stencil cutter came up the quay at six with a roll of card under his arm, the same as he had every spring for thirty years, and he did not look at the Mary Lowe until he had the tins of black open. Dad had asked for wings on the wheelhouse after the winter we lost the Ada, two great feathered sweeps either side of the window, so she could lift if the sea came for her.

I held the masking tape while Terry sprayed. He worked slow and grumbled about the wind off the mole, and every few strokes he stopped to blow grey dust off the card. Dad had said to leave the heart in the middle plain, white like the foam when she was running well. Terry said hearts were for lovers and the Mary Lowe had only ever been a lover to her crew in the sense that she kept them out of the cold. He cut it anyway, a small clean shape at the centre, and when he lifted the stencil the paint beneath had dried a pale cream where the card had kept it bare.

Dad was aboard the morning the wind came round to the north-east. He did not come back in on the tide. We went out that Sunday, me and Terry and six others in the Mary Lowe with the paint still tacky on her wheelhouse, and we found the Ada's buoy off the Hook but nothing else. The heart stayed the colour of the card.

Now I go down to the quay on Tuesdays and rest my palm on the place where the white heart sits. The paint is still cool under my hand, like a stone lifted from the bottom of a rockpool. Nobody has painted over it. Terry says it is a daft thing to keep, a hole in the middle of a picture. I tell him it is the only part of the boat that still holds a shape for Dad.
