Red bow tattoo on a hip
Other · Colour · Photo
A bow shape with a filled red-orange centre and a bold dark outline sits on the side of the torso, just above the waistband of light blue denim shorts. The linework is clean and solid, with flat colour and no visible shading. The tattoo sits in the upper-left area of the frame, with the rest of the image showing a white crop top and the denim.

The guard at the Lenka crossing has already unzipped your rucksack twice, and he is looking for something he cannot name. Not the tea, not the lace, not the jar of honey wrapped in your aunt's cardigan. It is the flat tin at the bottom, the one your grandmother sealed with waxed thread, and he keeps turning it over as if its weight might tell him something. You keep your face the way she taught you, polite and a little bored, and you say the ribbon is for a dressmaker in Orsk who has been waiting since spring.

He asks what a dressmaker wants with a tin of red ribbon. You tell him the truth: that her daughter wears a bow in her hair every Sunday, that the dressmaker has been cutting each one from the same reel for twenty years, and that the reel ran out in February. He prises the lid off with his thumbnail. Inside, under tissue, lies a single bow of red silk, pressed flat, the loops as wide as a child's hand, its centre knotted tight as a fist.
For a moment he doesn't speak. Then he laughs, a short surprised sound, and says his sister wore one exactly like it the summer she was nineteen, before she took the bus to the coast and never wrote back. He stamps your papers without another glance at the tin.
Outside the barrier the wind is coming off the fields. You tie the bow to the strap of your rucksack, and a gust lifts one loop and carries it over the wire towards the far side, where it snags on a fence post and stays there, red against the grey, the only thing you have left to give anyone on that side.
