Red bow tattoo on the upper hip
Other · Colour · Photo
A cropped photo of a red bow tattoo with three looped sections and a centre knot, outlined in black. The tattoo sits on the side of the upper hip and thigh, with the rest of the body and the face out of frame. The flat red fill and bold outline give it a simple, graphic look against the skin, with the denim shorts and white top filling the lower part of the picture.

Mrs Abernethy had tied parcels at the back of the Hebden Bridge post office for thirty-one years, and she had never once made a bow that came undone. So when a red ribbon arrived from the haberdasher in Halifax, with a card reading "Trial, do not sell", she tried it on the tin of Yorkshire tea meant for her sister in Canada and watched the loops sit up on the lid like a small, proud animal.

The trouble started on the Tuesday. Every parcel she tied that week came out with the same bow, three loops as fat as dinner rolls and a knot at the centre like a held breath. The vicar's wife sent back a jar of marmalade because the bow would not come off without tearing the paper. Mr Pardoe the postman swore he had carried a pair of boots to the wrong address only because the bow had looked so jolly he had stopped on the step to admire it.
On Friday a girl came in with a shoebox and no stamp. She did not ask for postage. She asked whether the bow could hold something that could not be posted at all. Mrs Abernethy looked at the knot for a long while, then lifted the ribbon off the box and tied it round the handle of the till.
She posted nothing that afternoon. The girl walked home with the shoebox under her arm, lighter than she had come in, and every receipt that went out of the shop for the rest of the month carried a small red bow printed across its corner, because the ribbon had decided where it wanted to be.
